W.I.L.D. Prayer: A Simple Guide to a Deeper Prayer Life
Have you ever wanted to pray but struggled to know where to begin or what to say? W.I.L.D. Prayer offers a simple framework to help you engage with God: Worship, Intercession, Listen, and Declaration. These four practices help us turn our attention toward God, bring others before Him, make room to listen, and express our faith in His Word.
W. Worship
Begin by turning your attention toward who God is. Worship expresses our love, gratitude, and reverence for Him. As we acknowledge His character and remember His faithfulness, we gain perspective on the circumstances we bring into prayer. You can worship through spoken words, a song, or a passage of Scripture.
Praise God for His holiness, goodness, mercy, and faithfulness.
Thank Him for specific ways He has provided for you.
Read Psalm 103:1–5 aloud and make its words your prayer.
Pray, “Father, You are faithful. I praise You for Your love and thank You for Your presence in my life.”
I. Intercession
Intercession means praying on behalf of others. We bring their needs before God, asking Him to work in their lives according to His wisdom and will. This practice draws our attention beyond our own concerns and helps us love others through prayer. Be specific, naming people and the needs they are facing.
Pray for a friend who needs healing, comfort, or direction.
Ask God to strengthen your church’s leaders and congregation.
Pray for people who need to know Jesus.
Pray, “Father, strengthen my friend today. Provide what they need, draw them close to You, and show me how I can help.”
L. Listen
Prayer includes giving God our attention. Slow down, open His Word, and allow time to consider what He is teaching you. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you recognize sin, understand Scripture, and identify a faithful next step. Weigh any impressions against the Bible, and seek wise counsel when needed. Listening grows through patience and a willingness to obey.
Read a short Scripture passage slowly and reflect on what it reveals.
Ask, “Lord, is there something I need to confess or surrender?”
Consider whether someone comes to mind whom you should encourage or serve.
Pray, “Lord, help me understand Your Word and respond obediently to what You show me.”
D. Declaration
Declaration means speaking truths from Scripture as an expression of faith in God. We affirm His character, His promises in their biblical context, and our commitment to follow Him. These declarations help shape our thoughts and actions around what God has revealed. Speak with confidence in Him while submitting your requests and circumstances to His will.
Affirm who you are in Christ and the grace you have received.
Speak biblical truth when fear or discouragement influences your thinking.
Declare your commitment to trust God and obey His Word.
Pray, “I belong to Jesus. His grace is sufficient for me, and I will trust Him as I take the next step.”
Make Room for W.I.L.D. Prayer
Start with a few minutes for each practice. Worship God, intercede for others, listen with an open Bible and a willing heart, and declare the truth of His Word. Let this framework help you develop an ongoing conversation with God that continues throughout your day.
