What Is Filling Your Heart?

What Is Filling Your Heart? Learning to Be Filled With the Holy Spirit

Something is always shaping the heart. Our desires, fears, thoughts, influences, habits, and decisions do not remain neutral. Over time, what we continually allow into our hearts begins influencing what comes out of our lives. That makes Paul’s command in Ephesians 5:18 incredibly important: “Be filled with the Spirit.” Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not merely about having an emotional spiritual experience. It is about increasingly allowing the Holy Spirit to influence, direct, and govern our lives.

Acts 5 shows us the frightening opposite. Peter asked Ananias, “Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?” (Acts 5:3). The issue was deeper than money. Ananias had a divided heart. He wanted to appear surrendered while secretly holding something back. Satan found room to work through deception, greed, and misplaced security. The question for us is simple: What are we allowing to fill our hearts?

The Heart Can Give Ground

Scripture repeatedly shows people allowing something contrary to God to gain influence within them. Luke 22:3 says that “Satan entered into Judas.” Judas had already been cultivating greed and eventually betrayed Jesus for money. Peter experienced something different. When he tried to redirect Jesus away from the cross, Jesus responded, “Get behind me, Satan!” (Matthew 16:23). Peter loved Jesus, but in that moment his thinking reflected human priorities rather than God’s purposes.

Achan provides another warning in Joshua 7. Scripture does not say Satan filled Achan’s heart, but it shows how unchecked desire develops. Achan later admitted, “I saw... I coveted... and took” (Joshua 7:21). He saw something, desire grew, he acted, and then he hid it. Sin often develops long before anyone else sees the behavior. What we entertain internally eventually influences what we practice externally.

Be Filled With the Spirit

This is why Ephesians 5:18 matters so much. Paul does not merely tell Christians to avoid sinful influence. He gives us something better to pursue: “Be filled with the Spirit.” The Christian life is not primarily about emptying ourselves of bad things. It is about continually yielding ourselves to God. The more the Spirit fills our hearts, the more He shapes our thoughts, desires, reactions, words, and decisions.

Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Notice the order. Walk with the Spirit. Stay close to God. Fill your mind with Scripture. Pray before reacting. Confess sin instead of hiding it. Respond when the Spirit brings conviction. Remove influences that repeatedly pull your heart away from Christ. Do not wait until temptation becomes behavior. Pay attention to what is happening in your heart.

What Are You Allowing to Fill You?

Ananias looked surrendered while something very different was happening inside him. That should cause all of us to examine ourselves. What thoughts are you repeatedly entertaining? What desires are you feeding? What compromise are you hiding? What voice is shaping your decisions? And most importantly, are you continually surrendering those places to the Holy Spirit?

We become filled with what we continually give ourselves to. So give the Spirit room. Let Him confront what is false, reshape what is disordered, strengthen what is weak, and lead what has been surrendered. Do not merely ask God to be part of your life. Ask Him to fill it.
