Holy Spirit: My Helper
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. - John 14:15-26
What’s the missing link between desire and consistent obedience?
John 14:15-26
Verse 15 – If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Key Point: Obedience is how we express love for Jesus.
I want to obey God… but I keep falling short.
How do we obey consistently?
Verse 16 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
Jesus has laid out something that seems unattainable at times: walk in obedience to my commands.
Jesus knows we can’t obey on our own—and He immediately addresses that by introducing the Helper.
He doesn’t just command—He empowers.
Verse 17 – even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Even the Spirit of truth
Now we have some more definition of the Holy Spirit - He is truth
Verse 18 – I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Not only will He come to us, the last verse says He will live inside of us
This is deeply personal: Jesus promises His presence through the Spirit.
We are not alone in our struggle to obey—He walks with us.
Verse 19 – Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
Jesus is speaking of His death and burial
He would die, they wouldn't see Him; He would rise, they would see Him
The promise here of because Jesus lives, we will live
Verse 20 – In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
In that day… what day?
How would they know?
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,[c] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. - John 20:19-22
With the Holy Spirit, now they would understand
This is hope for us. We are not left alone to try to understand
Verse 21 – Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
Repetition: love = obedience
“Commandments” refer to all Jesus has taught, not just moral rules but His way of life.
Obedience brings deeper intimacy with God.
How many of you desire to love God more and feel and know you are loved by God?
Love is freely given by God, but there is a deeper love we come to know and experience when we are in obedience to what Jesus taught.
Why?
Obedience is not about legalism—it’s about relationship.
Verse 22 – Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?
Jesus get ready to lay out the answer once again emphasizing love and obedience and the Holy Spirit
Verse 23 – Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
Jesus says it for the third time for emphasis: love for Him is proven by obedience.
There is a flow of things here…love, obedience, reward of love, indwelling
Verse 24 – Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
This is the flip side. No obedience = no real love.
Verse 25 – These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.
He’s preparing them to live without seeing Him—but not without guidance.
Verse 26 – But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
The Holy Spirit teaches and reminds.
When can say it like this: The Holy Spirit helps us live what Jesus taught.
He sharpens our hearts and minds to think like Jesus.
Application
2 Ways to Live This Out Regularly:
Sit with Jesus’ Words Until They Burn in You
When was the last time you sat with Jesus' words until they rewired your desires?
What does they reveal about Jesus?
What does He want for me?
Why don’t I believe this deeply?
Let the Holy Spirit make it personal.
Sit with it until it stirs your heart or convicts your thinking.
2. Memorize One Saying of Jesus Each Week
The Holy Spirit brings Jesus’ words to remembrance (John 14:26), but we must first store them in our hearts.
Say it aloud when you're walking, driving, or doing dishes.
Reflective Questions
What is one command of Jesus I know—but haven’t been living out—and why?
Do I genuinely believe the Holy Spirit can help me obey what feels too hard?
What would change if I regularly sat with Jesus’ words until they shaped my desires?
