A Life, Dedicated

Remember Lot’s wife. - Luke 17:32

28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot - they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29 but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all - 30 so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. - Luke 17:28-32

  • In 2026…

    • What are you going to pay attention?

    • What are you going to work for?

    • What are you going aim towards?

    • Where is your dedication?

    • What can you take in your attention, work, aim and dedicate to the Lord?

8 Then Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left."

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other.

12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the LORD. - Genesis 13:8-13

What Lot Did

  • Lot lifted his eyes (10) and saw

    • He was going by sight, not by faith

  • Chose for himself (11)

    • Rather than what God might want him to do

  • Separated himself from Abraham (11)

    • Decided to not be yoked with the man who had the promise from God

  • Moved his tent as far as Sodom (12)

    • Surrounded himself with ungodliness

Genesis 14

  • 4 kings take on 5 kings (Sodom) in the recorded war in the Bible

  • 4 kings win, take possessions from Sodom

  • One of these people taken was Lot and Abram hears of it

    • Gets 318 battle ready, trained men of his own house, goes after them, rescues lot, takes back the possessions and the women and children taken

Genesis 18

  • Summary

    • 3 angels come to meet with Abraham

    • 1 of them is the preincarnate Christ

    • The other 2 have an appointment at Sodom and Gomorrah

    • The 1 angel that is the preincarnate Christ takes Abraham to a view point and tells him what judgment is coming to Sodom and Gomorrah

    • Abraham tries to plead and intercede the area might be saved (Genesis 18:23)

  • At some point connect that Lot went back to Sodom after all of this

    • Gets down to just above the number of Lot’s family (10)

    • Lot, his wife, 2 daughters, 2 other daughters and their husbands (Book of Jasher)

    • “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.”

      • There were not any righteous other than Lot’s family

Genesis 19

1 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth 2 and said, "My lords, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way." They said, "No; we will spend the night in the town square." 3 But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. - Genesis 19:1-3

  • 1-3

    • At the gate isn’t just a location, it’s a office

      • You’re one of the city elders, judging, ruler, it’s like being on city council today

      • Lot is a righteous man (II Peter 2:7-8)

  • Why is Lot not only back in Sodom, but now part of the eldership

15 As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city." 16 But he lingered. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. 17 And as they brought them out, one said, "Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away." - Genesis 19:15-17

  • He lingered

  • Do not look back

    • When we come to Christ, we our flesh is crucified

23 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. 24 Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven. 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. - Genesis 19:23-26

  • She turned into a pillar of salt means having been killed by the fiery and sulphureous vapour with which the air was filled, and afterwards encrusted with salt, she resembled an actual statue of salt

  • Looked back

    • It wasn’t that she just turned

    • Read the texts

      • But Lot’s wife, behind him…

31 On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. - Luke 17:31-32

  • the one who is in the field not turn back…

    • KJV = let him likewise not return back.

    • Literal translation = let him not return to the things behind

Conclusion

  • We’ve covered 3 people today….Abraham, Lot, Lot’s Wife

  • This year you will be one of these three people

    • Will you be like Lot’s Wife, so tempted and consumed by the world that you find yourself going back to it?

    • Will you be like Lot, perhaps righteous, but placing yourself in ungodly places and focused on the wrong things?

    • Will you be like Abraham, going in faith, not perfect, but dedicating all you are to God and what He’s asking of you?

  • We have to put the life of the flesh behind us

Dedicate

  • How can we put the life of the flesh behind us?

    • Dedicate all you are and all you do until God

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33
