How to Establish Jesus as Lord of Your Home

A Christ-centered home does not happen accidentally. It is built intentionally, through everyday decisions that establish Jesus as Lord of your home and the way a family thinks, lives, speaks, and responds to one another.

Paul gives us a helpful picture of this in Colossians 2:6-7:

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

Paul reminds believers that they did not merely receive a message when they believed the gospel. They received Christ Jesus as Lord. Now they were called to continue walking in Him. That same principle can shape our homes. If Jesus is Lord of our lives, His lordship should increasingly influence the culture of our families. Verse 7 gives us four practical ways to make that happen.

1. Root It: What Truth Are We Putting Into Our Home?

Paul says we are to be “rooted” in Christ. The picture is of a plant sinking its roots deeply into good soil. Every home has roots. The question is what they are growing into.

What voices are shaping how your family views marriage, money, sexuality, success, conflict, forgiveness, and priorities? If Scripture is rarely discussed, other voices will gladly fill that space. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 tells God's people to keep His words on their hearts and teach them diligently to their children throughout ordinary life.

Establishing Jesus as Lord begins by intentionally bringing God's truth into your home. Read Scripture together. Talk about what God says when decisions arise. Allow biblical truth to become part of normal family conversation.

2. Build It: What Habits Are We Developing Because of That Truth?

Paul moves from the image of roots to a building, “built up in him.” Truth should eventually produce habits. If we believe prayer matters, prayer should become part of our home. If we believe God's Word guides us, Scripture should have a place in our routines. If we believe forgiveness is commanded, we should practice apologizing and forgiving one another.

Jesus said in Matthew 7:24 that the person who hears His words and does them is like a wise man who built his house upon the rock. Ask yourself, what are we regularly doing in our home because Jesus is Lord?

3. Establish It: What Convictions Are Becoming Non-Negotiable?

Paul then says believers should be “established in the faith.” As truth takes root and produces habits, those habits begin forming convictions. There should be certain things your family knows: This is who we are. This is what we believe. This is how we live because we belong to Jesus.

Joshua expressed this kind of settled conviction when he declared, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). Every family will experience pressure to compromise. Establishing your home means deciding beforehand what will remain settled when that pressure comes.

4. Celebrate It: Are We Recognizing God's Goodness?

Finally, Paul says believers should be “abounding in thanksgiving.” Thanksgiving makes an invisible faith visible. A family can easily become consumed with what is wrong, what is missing, or what needs to change. A Christ-centered home intentionally recognizes what God has done and continues to do.

Talk about answered prayers. Thank God for His provision. Celebrate His faithfulness. Let your children hear you give God credit for His goodness. Gratitude reminds the entire household, God is present here. God has been faithful to us. God is worthy of our trust.

Build Your Home Intentionally

A strong home does not accidentally become Christ-centered. Root it in God's truth. Build it through godly habits. Establish it with biblical convictions. Celebrate it through thanksgiving.

Start by asking one simple question: What is one thing we can change in our home this week that would more clearly demonstrate that Jesus is Lord here? Then do it.

Jesus becomes increasingly visible in our homes as His truth moves from something we believe into something our families actually live.
